The Call: Blue Skies

Peter Pan could fly.
Mary Poppins flew with her umbrella
To lift her high into the blue horizon.
I knew I could fly.
At night when everyone was asleep
(everyone in the world but me!)
I would crawl out my bedroom window
Across the strong branch of the old oak,
Nestle into my special place
In the crook of the tree
And stare up at the stars
Or watch the snow falling on a silent world
Or feel the rain against my skin…
I looked up at the sky
And knew I could fly.
One day.

One day
I climbed out the attic window
And out onto the roof.
I had my grampa’s
BIG English umbrella.
I opened it w-i-d-e
And waited for a good wind
And…
I
Jumped.
And hit the walk
In front of my grandmother
And the guests who had come for tea.
I broke an ankle.
I survived the lecture.
But I knew I could fly.
One day.

Foot in a cast, chained
to my room.
I looked out my window
and longed for the wind,
the blue sky…
My father said,
here is a way you can fly
and he put into my hands
a thick pad of paper,
newly sharpened pencils.
Let your words be your wings.
and so, I wrote.
I flew.

Years later I stood
At the highest point on Fuji
One could climb.
I looked up at the blue sky.
I stretched out my arms
And the wind blew in my hair.
I pulled out of my pack
a pad of paper and pen.
I wrote.
I closed my eyes…
I flew.

Oh, there are many ways to fly. Your father was a wise man who taught you the power of words. They can carry a person anywhere they want to go! Smiles.

I enjoyed the childhood memories, the certitude that you could fly, would fly, one day. We can indeed fly and soar thanks to our words and a lot of us do just that.

Beautiful personal share ~ You are blessed to have your father say these words to you:

Let your words be your wings.
    and so, I wrote.
    I flew.

And to be on that highest point of Mt Fuji, what a sight ~ Love the call of the words today !

You mean umbrellas don’t work for flight? Glad that you found a way to fly!

Oh how I love this! What a wise father: “Let your words be your wings.” Love that you made it to the top of the mountain – and flew!

Gorgeous, tender, & true, for even as the wild pack of poet dogs that we are, running reindeer & bigots & politicians into a frenzy, thanks for reminding us that we are peregrine, lone eagles, red-tailed hawks as well & now I understand why after a spirited bout of writing, I feel light-headed, sometimes getting nose bleeds & wind burns.

Oh yes and why in the summer, I dream of running in a field and lifting my arms and leaving the ground and wonder why, when I awaken the next day, I have grass stains on the bottom of my feet and when I pull out that paper, words flow.

To fly in words is a wisdom to partake.. To fly off roofs is one fear i still have.. and the only one i might add..:)

You must be inherently fearless to be able to brave that..:)

Or greater in imagination and creativity.. to set free!..:)

No. I was six and had no concept of fear. I just knew I could fly. I didn’t give up. A few months later, I did the off the roof thing again but with two umbrellas. That time I only sprained my ankle! 🙂

This is a wonderful poem. And I was further delighted to find (from reading the comments) that it is true. What a beautiful, beautiful story. God bless wise fathers, and I hope you get to climb Fuji-san again.

This poem is wonderful. It drew me into its story hypnotically. How wise your father! So glad you now fly. Oh, thank you for the lovely sky pictures. They hypnotized me too.

Truly a dream coming true, albeit not like a bird or Peter Pan, but a soaring of the spirit that you release in your words…wonderful!

I love the story quality of this poem.

    This is perfect…

“Let your words be your wings.
    and so, I wrote.
    I flew.”

and your mountainous writing closing…the perfect way to honor the mountain and take flight indeed.

    Beautiful!
