Ahhhh, but those baby birds are asleep full of breakfast, under Mom’s wings. Crows are nearby doing hawk patrol. It’s those silly squirrels swinging from and jumping up and down on the branches that will be Sunday dinner for the hawk families.

No sympathy….they steal my plums and tomatoes suck up the humming bird nectar from the feeders and make messes in the bird feeders and steal their eggs…rowdy little buggers. I was hoping for a good amount of plums to make umeboshi…..not now! 😦

I think the squirrels here in Sweden (red squirrels) are less troublesome.. hope you can get some plums elsewhere.. umbushi.. I need to make that some time.

We have grey, brown, and in some areas of the city, albino squirrels and we have flying sqirrels. We live in the country and the sqirrels are more sassy and fearless. The ones in the city area are shyer and mor cautius. I have a few jars of umeboshi that are one to three years old and getting just right to use. It is hard to find the proper umes around here. I could drive for hours up north th Philadelphia or, heaven help me, Manhattan and find good ones at a very high price. I like to use them in onigiri and a few bits chopped up in tamagoyaki or rice. Good dish for hot weather to stimulate the appetite or add to sunomono or other quick pickles. A bit of the pickling juice added, filtered, to sake is a different take for people used to cheaper, overly sweet sake. I do’t see or hear many squirrels so I guess they are napping. It is perfction sitting in my yard wth the sience, the warm sun and the smell of the zillions of clover blossoms in the air. A good afternoon for reading Hesse. Sqirrels….stay away!!! 🙂
