leaves like fallen flags –
tattered banners sodden by
all day rain stick to
the asphalt – shades of brown and
dull gold – dreams of red still
clinging to branches – a cold
fire burning away gray day.

Beautiful. I like thinking of leaves as fallen flags & also the dreams of red still clinging to the branches….resisting for a short time the pull to the dullness of fall. The last image is interesting…cold fire. On such days I would like to be sitting inside with a warm fire. Smiles.

there is a specific Japanese word that refers to these fallen leaves as fallen or tattered banners. Yesterday my road was carpeted by these leaves, sodden and sticking to everything! and then, there are the last two bushes flaming pure red with still some green leaves and holding firm in the face of falling fall. I look forward to those days of sitting inside with a warm fire and reading. and hopefully snowing outside!

Fabulous imagery of autumns chilly wet days…love the fire on those days…its warmth and smell.

I think during this weekend the leaves left… now only the bare branches, I truly love how you describe those bold colors against the autumn grey…

not easy to write this moment of autumn without cliché but you’d done it beautifully – I like the idea of tattered banners – (like bunting in the rain)

Thank you. Autumn is my favorite season and I have had a true love affair with it all my life. Like love, seasons are often done to death. I try hard to put a different perception of seasons. Thank you.
