Star Jars
Summer night –
Fireflies and falling stars.
By my bed
jar of fireflies – magical nightlight –
released at dawn

By my grownup bed
a jar of stars
plucked from the summer night sky –
My private galaxy,
eternal fireflies
lighting my dreams until rosy dawn.

Lovely imagery here! Alas, fireflies are not common where I live.

I am sorry. They are truly magical. It is a great joy of childhood to very gently capture a few and put in a jar with holes punched in the top and put by the bedside. Then let them back out in the morning.

I grew up without fireflies… and too few stars… but I do understand the true magic of such a jar… the magic of keeping stars on the bedstand is magic.

Toni, I absolutely love this. We were on the same page today. 😉 What is it about jars?

I grew up with fireflies (Ohio). but then moved west when I was around 10. I miss them.

They are magical. I still put them by my bedside. One escaped and found its overnight home on the dreamcatcher in the window before I put her back outside in the morning.

No fireflies here either. I grew up without them. But I can imagine them well, twinkling like the stars. 🙂 I love it. The phrase “a jar of stars” is just magical.

    I’ve never seen a firefly. It’s on my list of must-see-things. 🙂

I love the idea of a private galaxy! We don’t have fireflies here, I wish we did!

Fireflies sound so magical. We don’t really see them over here. I love that every day magic of childhood.

I love fireflies! As a city girl, they are a rare sight indeed, oh but the magic of them when seen! This write evokes that magic wonderfully.

I grew up with fireflies too, Toni. They truly feel like magical little creatures at night blinking and winking in the woods. Beautiful poem!

What an amazing nightlight that would be…
My husband rides his bike on trails at night and is often accompanied by fireflies.

Wonderful! Oh that is one thing I miss from my Iowa days….the magic of fireflies in those summer nights 🙂 Here in the city, we have blinking windows on high rises — not the same at all 😦

Love the visuals. Takes me back to my own childhood of catching fireflies. They do create an ethereal light, don’t they?

    Nicely done.

We used to do the same thing. It was magical because where I lived darkness was so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face so those fireflies were really beautiful and plentiful. This poem is really beautiful, Toni, and brings up a lot of great memories!

We all need to keep a jar of stars by our bed, I think…..and we can reach down and grab one or two at any time. Lovely write, Toni.
