The Calendar is slow

“Autumn knocks softly…” Toni Spencer

Today the calendar says it is the first day of autumn.
The weather is screaming late summer.
All the leaves are still green,
the sky is still the clear blue of summer,
the nights are still warm and moist
and filled with the sounds of insects.

I long for cooler weather,
for the Arabian tapestry of colored leaves
and the rich tangy snap of apples
in my mouth –
The smell of fallen leaves and rain
and the profligate gold of small wild sunflowers
blooming in ditches and fields –
a frosty morning
and deeper blue of autumn sky –
longer nights and shorter days.

The Hunters Moon is a round silver dollar
In the sky.
The Milky Way spirals around it –
Silver pennies – change for the moon’s pocket.

I long for autumn.
Oh! How I long for autumn.

I do too…I welcome autumn’s cooler air and savor the ripeness of the changing season.

Though I cannot agree with your sentiment, you have expressed it beautifully as always. I am ready for summer already again. I do love this line: “the rich tangy snap of apples / in my mouth –.” Fresh apples and pears are one thing I do appreciate about fall.

I’m with Linda, but once again, fall has enraptured me with its colors of russet and umber and crisp sweet smell of smoke from chimneys lain dormant during summer’s blaze.

Oh, this is wonderful! I couldn’t agree more! I’ve been sorting out all my sweaters and woolly jackets, ready for walking in the Norfolk mist and kicking leaves.

This is beautiful. I especially like the mention of the tangy apples. It makes me want to simmer a nice cinnamon mixture on the stovetop tonight (even if it’s really too hot for that still). But I’m gonna do it anyway. 😛

    Happy fall, sweetness.

Like most changes, Autumn can be gradual, especially when we’re looking for it. My favorite line: ” for the Arabian tapestry of colored leaves”

This is so beautiful, we are having a very mild September here too. I especially love ‘silver pennies – change for the moon’s pocket’. Thank you so much for sharing :o)

Today is our first day of real autumn weather. It is such a special season in so many ways. I can’t handle cold anymore, but the colors make up for it. Just noticed the first branch outside my window to turn gold. I hope autumn comes soon to you and brings you comfort.

I love those cool and crisp blue days but once those the grey mist starts and stay for weeks … I despair.

Its coming soon but like you, summer is still hanging around. Love the smell of that apples and: Arabian tapestry of colored leaves-

Thing about Autumn, aside from its stunning beauty, is that it is a death scene, a harbinger for Winter (which is always something I’m discontented with). Summer can be onerous too, so I’m a Spring/rebirth kind of a guy.

Autumn – my favorite time of year. We need the cyclical cycle – so I don’t think of it as death but rejuvenation.

blooming in ditches and fields –
    … so pretty!!!

I’ve been noticing those little wild sunflowers here as well on some nature walks and yet, I do not remember them from other years. A wonderful poem…I especially like the “Arabian tapestry of colored leaves” and “Silver pennies–change for the moon’s pocket”. Autumn has started out warmly here…a gentle transition, but we will soon be blindsided by the extreme cold.

Gorgeous lines–we are finally cooling down after a too-hot (for me) summer!

You got the mood of autumn just right. My favorite lines full of imagery:
for the Arabian tapestry of colored leaves
and the rich tangy snap of apples

What a lovely description of an autumn morning. 🙂

Where we are, Fall is making headways at last. I see some leaves turning already and it is much cooler, too.
