Today is Open Link Night at the Pub. You can submit one poem of your choice of format and subject. I picked crows. There are apparently several prompts out there today regarding crows but I am not linking to any of them. Come visit us at dVerse! PS I also have other names for groups of crows hidden in my poem. http://dversepoets.com/2017/04/20/openlinknight-194/
The Crows are telling Stories
The crows are telling stories –
sitting on the wire
flying down to take a look-see
hovering over a parcel of worms
and pulling up a worm or two
mustering the troops to attack a hawk
The crows are telling stories –
squawking barking cackling
whistling squabbling cawing
their outlaw eyes weighing their options
their rivals their lovers
their nestlings
The crows are telling stories
arguing that it will rain
will remain dry
lifting their heavy wings
and swatting at the wind
and each other
The crows are telling stories.

So enjoyed this as I have been greatly entertained by huge crows down here and have seen them get after hawks. For that matter, I’ve seen little birds gang up on them, too–quite effectively.

That’s a noisy bunch of squabbling birds ~ I am sure they have lots of stories to share ~

It wouldn’t surprise me if crows are communicating in some way like this. They seem to know more as a flock than we seem to think they should be able to know.

Oh I love this, Toni. You captured the essence of crow behavior and then some. Great poem. They really are smartass birds.

Those crows are an evil lot. They’re lying, cheating and conniving. You painted the truth. I guess that’s why a flock of crows is called a murder of crows.

Oh Walter. I do not believe that like humans, animals are born sinful. I think they are clever, friendly, and they help keep the hawks at bay and protect the smaller birds. They are also called a hover and a parcel.

I really enjoyed this, Toni! I’ve been listening to the crow in my garden this week –
only one. It’s been calling out for other crows and none have replied. Or maybe it’s just telling me stories!

This is absolutely stunning, you have captured the many moods and shades to crows 🙂 especially love; “The crows are telling stories –squawking barking cackling
whistling squabbling cawing their outlaw eyes weighing their options their rivals their lovers, their nestlings.” Beautifully penned.

What a richness of crow-related poetry today at dVerse! They are fascinating to watch – although they also seem to be watching us and gossiping about us, as you say.

Great form for the story of crows! Nicely done. Crows fascinate many of us. I’ve always felt that in each country I’ve lived in, they are saying something different in their caws — some word in the language of that land. They are clever complicated creatures — like Sapiens, perhaps. You gave then that sapien quality here.

Thank you for your kind comment Sabio. Yes, I think the crows of every country speak the same language of cleverness!
