dVerse Poets Pub: Quadrille

Today Mish is prompting for Quadrille Monday at dVerse Poets Pub.  A quadrille is a poem of exactly 44 words using a prompted word (or variant of the word).  Today the word is creak – creaking, creaks, creaked. Come join us for these excellent short poems! it was rather obvious to use the Halloweenish creepy type of narration. Of course, I didn’t do didn’t do the obvious.

The House
At night the house is silent.
No creaks, no groans, no settling.
Low and brick –
Cool in the summer,
warm in the winter.
Much laughter in this house –
it welcomes all.
Home says this house.
Safe says this house.
Love lives here.

Beautiful. Makes me think of the song ‘Our House’ by CSN.

I almost feel that the house is an embrace of arms… of course it has to be silent in night.

The night noises within my home become familiars, and they greet rather than annoy my restless slumber–but your more silent domicle befits your meditative core.

I’m with Paul on this – ‘Our House’, Graham Nash wrote it about him and Joni.

Yes indeed. We love this house. I dread the day we have to leave – either to SNF or die. It is warm and comfy and happy. I used to have two cats in the yard but they died several years ago.

LOVELY photo and LOVELY sentiment in this. Love lives here indeed. I am so certain, knowing you just from our years at dVerse, that your home abounds in love — inside and out! 🙂

Thank you Lillian. I try hard to make it full of love and welcoming. No critter ever comes here hungry or thirsty and goes away wanting. My husband cringes every time he sees a raccoon at night waddling around the yard…LOL

Isn’t it amazing how houses can become so much more an just a collaboration of materials. This captures that perfectly … a good, tight piece of writing.

Houses do have characters don’t they, and some are less welcoming than others.
I am glad yours is a homely place of love.

‘that horrible crapet’ I do like your typo—it shows what you thought of the previous owner’s soft furnishings. Love the poem. I prefer welcoming house poems to scary ones.

Lovely poem. Have you noticed how some houses feel so welcoming–not the decorating, but the house itself? And I’ve walked into other houses and just had a really bad feeling from it.

So have I. When we were looking at this house, I felt a hesitancy about it, as if it were waiting to see what we were about. I know we spoke of the land about it, the trees, how it would be perfect for to roses and birds. When we returned for a second look it welcomed us. Of course my husband felt nothing! But we bought it and it has been a happy house ever since.

Bless your heart. Any house or apartment can be a home like that. All you need to do is to fill it with love and happiness and make people welcome. When I was in my early twenties, a co-worker spontaneously invited me to get apartment. It was a one room apartment with a combo kitchen/bedroom/living room with the bathroom at one end. She had made it so pleasant with not much money and she offered me chicken salad out of a plastic tub, spread in a bit dog bun and iced water with a slice of lemon to drink. It goes down as one of the most enjoyable meals and times I have had in my life. I learned a lot from Cynthia that night. The lesson stayed with me all these years.
