Haibun: The Winter Moon

A haibun for Victoria’s for dVerse’s first haibun prompt for 2018 on Fuyu No Tsuki, the winter moon. A haibun is non-fiction prose with a seasonal haiku to end it.

The temperatures have been in the lower teens and hovered at 0F the past few days. With my husband recovering from a concussion and pneumonia, we decide to stay in on New Year’s Eve. The outside is brutally cold but the inside of the house is warm and redolent of savory cooking. We sit at the table and ladle French Onion Soup to our mouths and sip wine. Outside the moon shines through the window. I tell my husband about it being a wolf moon and how it will also be a blue moon. Later that evening, I hear the air horns and fireworks going off at midnight. My husband sleeps, tired out from a long day. The moon shines through the curtains, shadows of lace fall on the floor and my husband’s sleeping face, calm and still as the moon itself. I put on my coat and go outside. I stare up at the moon luminous as a glowing pearl. A bit of movement – a raccoon trying to scare up a garbage can to rustle. I throw out some bread I had in my pocket, waiting there for such an occasion.

I just wish I could have it like that… the full moon was totally hidden by clouds. This morning I saw the moon before heading to work. But no lace curtains here…

I’m old fashioned. We have lace curtains at many of the windows. Always makes for nice shadows.

This is just the sort of New Year’s eve I would choose. To me this beautiful poem (when you are outside)was washed in a silver-blue watercolor. Thanks for joining, Toni. And yum, French onion soup!

Actually it was more like silver, washing every thing in its argent glow. Black and white and gray. French onion soup is my husband’s favorite soup and I work really hard to make it so good, other FO soups taste like dishwater! I am so bad.

I love the way you contrast the brutal cold of outside and the inside, warm and redolent of savory cooking – cosy – and I could hear the fireworks going off at midnight. It’s great to go outside to stare at the moon but how amazing to feed a raccoon, Toni!

They are scavengers, masked robbers. But as much as I hate them tipping over our garbage cans, in this cold I knew of at least two that would show up. Hence the bread. I can’t let anything go hungry, especially in this brutal weather. I’m a softie.

Oh, lovely! So delicate, the quiet, the lace curtain, the raccoon being polite. I hope the quiet has been good for you both.

I hope he is feeling better, and although it must have been unpleasant, the soup and the moon sound like they made up for it. I have never made french onion soup, on the day of the storm I got up early and made Leek and potato soup, some for us and some for my husband to take to his elderly parents, winter comfort food.
