For Poet’s United, Midweek Motif. Sumana has the prompt which is words.
Words Fail
“Actions speak louder than words” – old proverb
Words –
A poor way to communicate.
How often words are taken amiss –
to cause anger, make glad, cause tears,
a different language sounds like gibberish –
reduce one to helpless snorts and guffaws.
the touch of a gentle hand upon one’s shoulder
a smile, a frown, the rolling of the eyes,
lips pursed or a blush –
the wind through the trees
the soft peep of peepers down at the creek
on a warm summer night
or the hooting of an owl
in a crystal night with a sky full of stars
in the depths of a cold winter night…
the things that speak to the soul
rather than to the ears –
Words.
Words can fail.

Yes, sometimes words do fail. I don’t, however, believe that is always the fault of the speaker. I like your thought provoking poem,

I think that is the point I was trying to make but it became garbled. So often we don’t really listen either – just with half an ear.

They certainly can. I like the things that speak to the soul in your second stanza much more.

Thank you

True. Words cannot reach the depth of the soul. Love all the wordless, soul stirring examples. Beautiful Toni.

Thank you! Thank you for this wonderful prompt as well.

words can never be that which they are referencing.

Simple joy!
the things that speak to the soul
rather than to the ears –
Really like these lines.

Yes words can definitely fail. I like the things that speak to the soul because my ears and my brain don’t always hear very well.
Feb 15, 2018 @ 14:06:57
Nor do mine. but I think it is the failure of my brain to adequately translate. 🙂

Words CAN fail, true enough. Absorbing the beauty around us requires no words!
Feb 15, 2018 @ 14:06:00
Exactly!

Words can fail, agree and yet sometimes, silence is not enough!! But the discerning can hear, can’t they!!!!

Snap! That’s my title, too. But you are saying something different from me. I particularly love the beauty of that last verse.

words can fail
words can lie too
actions tell all
in my family
love you
were not words we used
we did not need to
we all felt and knew we were loved
by behaviour

Exactly! My grandmother was reserved but oh, so loving. We all knew she loved us dearly because of how she treated us.
