The Southern Wind

In Honor of Walt Whitman’s birthday and his poem The Song of Myself – a song of myself for Tuesday Platform at Real Toads.

Eno River – public doman

The Southern Wind
I am a southern woman born and bred.
Compared to my Yankee cousin I move….
Like a sloth. Which is cool by me.
I like to dawdle behind and look at the overlooked things –
The tiny flowers hidden in the grass
or the acorn still attached to the branch
wrenched by the wind from the oak
or the small yellow butterfly
drinking from the honeysuckle.
But I am also the dragon tea set –
two of the cups cracked and mended with gold.
I am the Smokie Mountains covered in mist
And I am also Fuji covered in clouds.
Peaches warmed by the sun are my skin.
One day my ashes will be scattered
into the South Wind –
Minamikaze –
Blown across the red dirt fields –
Blown across the slow moving Eno River
Blown into the ocean, The Crystal Coast
Blown back home

A Southern woman it seems hailed from a strong rash of character. Obviously, Toni they can hold out on their own!

Enjoyed this to the utmost–the contrast between all the cultures that have made you the wonderful person you are.

Every part I come to is superlative, Toni. My favorite bit when she tarries,
“I like to dawdle behind and look at the overlooked things –,” of which she’d never grasp if she hurried.

But I am also the dragon tea set –
two of the cups cracked and mended with gold..

This appeals to me, being born in the year of the dragon.

Thank you Vivian. ?? I am more like a sloth, hanging out and just…hanging! Yesterday, the 8 year old grandchild who lives with her grandparents ran out the road while I was walking by. She asked if she could carry my sword. I was most pleased. I showed her how to prop it on her shoulder so it wouldn’t drag in the dirt.. It was great. She thought she was so cool and she was! She chattered the whole walk and swung it a couple of times. I showed her how to properly hold it with both hands. Her grandmother was appalled. If course it was sheathed and I kept it that way. ??
