The Rain

For the Tuesday Platform over at Toads.

The Rain
Listen to me the way you listen
to the rain – with your head cocked
to one side and your eyes half closed,
a faint smile on your lips.
Touch me the way you touch the rain –
your fingertips extended and your hand cupped
feeling it with all your self.
Dance with me the way you
dance in the rain –
with total abandon
with joy and knowledge of the fleeting
nature of the rain,
holding your face up to take the kiss
of the rain fully and deeply,
your arms extended like the
wings of an owl,
ready to lift off into the sky.

I love the repeated lines about rain and the whole thing is just gentle and pleasing. Of course owls are always cool.

This is stunning, Toni! I love the imperatives throughout, that give the poem its urgency and passion, and the intimate descriptions. I particularly enjoyed the lines:
‘Dance with me the way you
    dance in the rain –
    with total abandon
with joy and knowledge of the fleeting
    nature of the rain,
holding your face up to take the kiss
of the rain fully and deeply’.

It all seems so perfect the way you have phrased your desire…a touch, a kiss, a dance like rain.

there is such a subtle, sublime longing here – almost like a silent plea to a lover, in the asking, for more than love on a surface –
and the way you’ve used the energy of rain – and the wonder and joy, or it could be harder, harsh – is interesting; what makes it most palatable is how you’ve infused this with such emotion – and allow us soak ourselves in a dance that we are watching and yet also dancing …
this is really evocative Toni – and simply …. gorgeous 🙂

One of your most beautiful works, Toni
The imagery is just gorgeous. And intensely evocative.
