Another poem for Brendan’s prompt on resistance also posting at Poets United Poetry Pantry.

“Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there
is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity.
Perhaps wisdom… is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.” Anthony Bourdain

I am a simple person.
I am not an intellectual pulling deep meaningful quotes from people long dead.
I resist change.
I am like the creek that flows at the bottom of the hill,
clear water flowing smoothly over rounded stones, warn by the years of my progress.
Leaves float on my surface,
swirling on my soft current
until they move on or drop to the sandybottom.
I often climb a certain oak and sit there listening to world around me.
Often I sit in silence.
Sometimes I play my violin
I watch the wood creatures going about their daily lives
living life one step, one mouthful at a time.
I am like the creek that flows at the bottom of the hill.
I am a simple person.
I try to be the change.

I have always thought that we are all simple in the end… we just have to understand that nothing that’s simple is easy… we all know that, and expressing them is the true challenge for all of us…

To know one’s self is a great accomplishment. The self-knowledge that flows through this poem inspires me to go deep, and deeper, Thank you.

I admire the objective you aspire to and describe here. Certainly the way to be…

And, in the end, it will be the simple people who are the change.

It is the simple people who will prove to be the change that comes in this world.. 💜

I really like this one and connect with it. I like the part about resisting change while trying to be the change.

No purer statement than that, friend. To “be the change” is to have no resistance to it, to flow like water. — My element, though the poetic is wholly yours! And thanks for the Bourdain quote.

This is so beautiful. I love the image of you as creek, leaves floating on your surface, and of you sitting in the tree, listening or playing your violin. I do believe as Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that simplicity is the way to be the change. Loved this poem, Toni.

I love your clarity and the appreciation of the natural world, which you always seem able to express anew.

I like the idea of being a simple person. There is beauty in simplicity, I think. Sometimes we have to resist the complexities and go back to basics. Smiles.

Sometimes being simple can be complex – at least I feel that way at times.

This is a lovely poem telling of a simple person, indeed. My favorite line, “I am like the creek that flows at the bottom of the hill,
clear water flowing smoothly over rounded stones.

I must have forgotten to comment. I like that you know yourself to be a “simple” person. Simple is best. Perhaps it requires more creativity, to be simple? Perhaps you have to dig deeper, and you always do!!

Quite a reflective thought — being a simple person doesn’t make the path so simple after all.
    Interesting penmanship.

No it doesn’t. It sometimes make the path harder, with all the complications going on about one. Ha my friend, I love your comments on my poems. However, would you please be honest with your comments with me? Let me know what you like, don’t like, how the poem makes you feel, what you think about it in general….this is in regards to the dVerse Pub Talk on critiquing. Thank you and hugs.

Hey, Toni. I try to be honest in my comments with a certain consideration that doesn’t follow a suggestive tone or critique. I will now be more detailed in how the poem made me feel, and my personal interpretation about your verse and what makes it work.
I’d be delighted if you would do the same.
        xoxo Anmol
