The weight of Love

For Kerry’s Prompt on Real Toads – Camera Flash and a Flash 55

The Weight of Love
All those love locks fastened to all the bridges –
Each one telling of eternal love,
Each one making note of a love commemorated –
Each lock pulling the bridges to pieces,
Adding weight to their load.
Destroying the bridges,
We fasten love locks on people
Destroying them.
Pulling them down,
Such is the nature of love.

I was drawn in this direction but I’d already written one about the Love Bridge in Wroclaw. Instead, I was inspired by something I saw at the Spellbound exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum on my recent visit to Oxford.
Your message is a powerful one, Toni, and I agree that the padlocks are destroying the bridges. I love the irony of the last line!

This is an apt metaphor for the destructive side of love.

Oh the symbolism people attach to these locks! ❤ It’s kind of sad that they are being removed from the bridges due to safety concerns.. but it’s necessary.. sigh..

The locking down aspect of love is a fascinating part… sometimes passion can be similar to prison, one that we enter willingly until it weighs us down.. very apt.

What a great metaphor…..i have seen those locks on bridges…….and felt the weight of “love” that sought to oppress. But not for long. Smiles.

Oh, such is indeed the nature of love which puts a lock on it, out of desperation or conflict. And the weight of it would tear it down eventually. Such wonderful wisdom in this metaphor. 🙂

It can happen…maybe it allways does?

This is a wonderful poem filled with wisdom Toni. I was fortunate to see the bridges in Paris. My husband and I thought it was a travesty.

I absolutely love this. Love really does carry an extra weight with it.

Love locks are fastened to many people who cannot cast them off.

Nice poem. Toni. Our daughter just returned from Paris reporting that her lock on a Seine River Bridge was missing. She and my grandaughter had put it on several years ago, before it was always there. There were still many locks remaining.
I told her that someone had picked their lock.

Nobody picked their lock. They are in the process of being removed. Shame on you for telling her that. I hope you will tell her differently.
