Fall Knocks Slowly

For Real Toads Tuesday Platform

Fall Knocks Slowly
Fall knocks slowly at summer’s door:
an old friend with shyness at returning and
maybe told to leave.
Leaves turn yellow and
slowly drop on green grass and
turn brown to be swept away
by chill winds.
Breezes once warm start
to be chill at evening
and daylight’s gold luster fades
to early evening.
Evening comes too soon for those of us who love the
sweet warm days and azure skies
but summer opens the door to fall and
the visitor glides in and
settles down to stay until
winter bids it go.
In the cold winter
might stars seem to burn brighter –
heaven’s nightlights to keep us safe
while we sleep and dream of spring.

Autumn does inspire poetry. Nicely written.

I like thinking of autumn as a shy old friend visiting at the end of summer. This is quite peaceful.

Thank you Barry. Fall is my favorite season and then winter.

That’s interesting. My wife’s favorite season is summer.

She asked me mine and I thought for a moment… I guess I don’t have one. My favorite season is whichever one I’m enjoying in real-time.

A lovely, lovely poem. My favorite time of year, except for allergies, the rag weed is a pain! I pray for snow.

I am such an old winter bear that I rarely dream of spring–I dream of fall and winter. I love the image of the shy guest returning, unsure of reception.

I actually wrote this for a friend. She lost her brother to suicide…he had a rare neurological disease and was dying slowly and painfully. He planned it about a month before the event. Very sad.

Love this fall ‘capture’. My favorite line: “Evening comes too soon for those of us who love the sweet warm days and azure skies”

Beautiful, Toni. I like Heaven’s nightlights too. I bussed down-Island this weekend….spectacular leaf colour all the way. My fave season.

Love the shy one knocking . . . the night lights of winter. It feels like that this year, a hesitation at the door, a need for a little illumination.

A beautiful poem. I would happily spend the rest of my life in summer. I avoid cold weather where possible and am already hatching plans on how to avoid next winter. It is Spring down under at the moment…

Fall does indeed knock slowly…and so subtly. It is winter before one knows it. I like all of the details you have added to your poem. One of them especially – evening comes too soon! I am not a fan of those long dark winter eves!

Your words are lovely Toni – calm and beautiful’
Autumn has its amazing glory before winter bids it farewell. An autumn chill is creeping through the (slightly ajar) french doors as I write and I welcome its cool clean air.
The thought of winter makes me dream of spring even now…

Oh, so beautifully described! It is always my favourite season, but where I live now in the sub-tropics we see few falling leaves or changing colours. Your poem reminds me of autumns in the temperate climate I grew up in. Australian native trees are evergreen, so even where I grew up we must have had a lot of imported trees which flourished in that climate. It was certainly very pretty!
