Double Confession

“In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you” The Grass Roots

A smoldering hot August night,
Cicadas sawing and humming bird moths
circling the cleomes.
End of season honeysuckle perfuming the air
and gardenias gleaming in the moonlight.
You came over for dinner and I spilled lemonade
in your lap because I loved you so much
and my hand refused to be steady.
We had been to a kendo demonstration
and you were one of the demonstrators.
In the living room your katana rested on the coffee table.
I loved you so much.
I wanted to tell you but I was afraid of losing you
as a friend –
I loved you so much.
We sat in the glider desultorily moving back and forth
When you said to me,
as if in an afterthought –
Watashi wa kokoromara anata o ashitemiasu*.
I thought I understood you but…
What did you just tell me?
I love you with all my heart,
you whispered.
I sat up straight and glared at you.
You laughed and pulled me close.
I have been wanting to tell you that since we met.
I leaned against you.
I loved you so much.

I love how the words of the quotation echo throughout your ‘Double Confession’, Toni. It’s a stunning confession of love, with a beautiful setting and a tender anecdote about your Japanese lover.

Oh, so tender and so very emotive, Toni! The repetition of “I loved you so much” makes me feel that yearning to know, to acknowledge, and to share this love. 🙂

Loved the Japanese vocab in this – Kendo, Katana and ‘Watashi wa kokoromara anata o ashitemias’ – I have memorised this last one 🙂
Beautiful poetry filled with love, speaks of love and admiration.

This is so beautiful… a wonderful and sweet beginning, and how hard it is to take the first step… to lose a friend can be a terrible thing if you are not successful.

Total honesty is the best way when you are with someone you love; hoping of course that it is reciprocated!
