For Kim’s Prompt over at Real Toads. Based on a book she is reading, she became entranced with the words “sarcastic percussion”. She wants us to write about an instrument or sarcastic percussion. LOL. We had a perfect example of this last Sunday morning – early!
Haibun: The Woodpecker
Silent Sunday Morning – suddenly – BAP! BAPBAPBAPBAP! BAP! My husband rolls over and mutters, we may as well have a cat. Again – BAPBBAPBAPBAPBAPBAP! Like a snare drum. It is the woodpecker, I mumble. I pull on my robe and stagger outside. The woodpecker is hanging on to the vinyl shutter for all he is worth and begins again. Hey! I yell at him. He stops and looks around at me. I shake the suet feeder so he will see that it is full. He flies to the suet holder as I go back inside. I crawl into bed and snuggle up to my husband. BAP! BAP! BAPBAPBAPBAP! We move into the guest bedroom where it is quieter.
woodpecker restarts –
sarcastic percussion drums again –
no sleep this Sunday

You have a woodpecker already, Toni! Ours won’t turn up until spring is truly here. I couldn’t help chuckling at the image of a woodpecker pecking on your vinyl shutter – our woodpecker is too shy to come anywhere near the house. I love that you made him aware of the feeder but smiled again at the ending and your haiku. We have had a similar situation with a very strident chaffinch.

We have woodpeckers year around down here. Several different types. I love them but this noisy guy can be annoying. There are several different suet feeders around. I have to laugh at the dents in the shutter. We had replaced the wooden ones because they were falling apart with vinyl so we didn’t have to paint them. Now this woodpecker…

Well, I did my hour for the RSPB Big Birdwatch yesterday, Usually we have all sorts of birds, including all the little pretty ones that flitter in and out of bush and tree. For the first 45-50 minutes there wasn’t one bird in the garden – and then I got two blackbirds, three magpies and four fat woodpigeons!

Toni vs Nature …aaaaand Nature wins 🙂 Love the haibun and the haiku. You definitely did the prompt title some justice.

Toni- I have at least 3 right now in my front tree and I am watching a red shafted Northern Flicker go after the suet block! They can be annoying, but wow, they are beautiful. I never knew a Northern Flicker was so large.

We call flickers the Lumber God ariund her because of their size.

A cute Haibun, Toni. We had for several years a woodpecker outside our bedroom window that pecked the tree for worms to feed her babies. She would wake us up but we’d go back to sleep.

This one is like a gatling gun on our house! Hard to go back to sleep.
