He Survived

He survived
“What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Charles Dickens

He survived after being thrown away by his person’s heirs
roaming the neighborhood living off stale popcorn and bread thrown out for the birds.
Feral dogs, snow, thirst he fought to live.

I saw him and brought him in and he loved me instantly.
unconditionally through my days of darkness and cancer.
he guarded me and forgave me.

Who would have thought so great a heart would ever stop beating.

Oh my, how adorable he was, and you were blessed to have all this love from him.

Wonderful, Toni. One doesn’t rescue them to be rewarded but we’ve made a friend forever. Cats have an instinct that we don’t have, eerie. Our friend finished her life in a nursing home. The cat there, a large white one, invariably would spend many patuents’ last two weeks with them, in their rooms .

There was a couple of cats where my mother was in the nursing home. They spent time with all the residents but when they started paying particular attention to certain ones, staff took notice. Usually the persons died within a few days.

If only their great hearts could beat on forever, or at least as long as we live. Some animals have extra big hearts. Pugsley was one.

Oh Toni, that last line really got me. They give us so much in return don’t they? I am so glad you had him to get you through such a rough time in your life!

His was a mighty spirit. When my first dog Sundance died, my whole world turned dull and gray for a time. I heard “Puff the magic Dragon” and cried over the line “without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave.” I just could not imagine a world without him in it. What finally started to bring me back was knowing that he would not have wanted me to quit; that he didn’t save my soul–and he did–just to have me give up. But it was hard. He, too, was a stray. We saved each other.

Is this Sam…? I do remember when he passed, and I can see he left a void behind…

If only their hearts could carry on forever.. this is such a poignant and heart-wrenchingly beautiful poem, Toni! ❤️ I have a cat in my apartment building who seems to have been adopted by everyone who resides here. I feed him from time to time 🙂

Good for you. Some neighborhoods have a cat that everyone feeds and give shelter to. Some cats are happy with that.

Some relationships are meant to be- and bring so much love.

I want that Charles Dickens quote on a fridge magnet to go with the ones that say ‘The more I know about men, the more I love my cat’ and ‘Cats leave paw prints on your heart’. I know how I felt yesterday while little Mojo was having four teeth extracted by the vet, and Tosca left a huge hole in our life a few years ago, as you know, Toni. You gave that little guy so much love and he purred it right back to you. The last line has me sobbing.

Another buff-and-white cat who, when it decided to love a human, *really* loved its humans. It’s sad when people aren’t able to place their animal friends before they die–reminder to everybody, check your emergency pet care plans!–but nice that Sam found you.
