For Bjorn’s prompt at Real Toads: Cosmology and the creation of our universe, our expanding universe.
Unknown Worlds
“f you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” Carl Sagan
I remember the moment when as a child,
I realized there were people I did not know.
I was standing up in the backseat and looking
out the car window at another car full of people.
I said to my papa,
I don’t know those people over there.
My mother turned around and said, of course you don’t.
they don’t live in our neighborhood.
I pondered it.
I remember standing on a chair watching my grandmother
roll out pastry for a pie.
She put it in the oven and I went outside.
I looked up into the blue sky at the sun.
Later that day when it had changed to night
I looked up at the stars.
I know you, I said.
I know all of you.

Oh that beautiful view through the eyes of a child, especially when that child was you!

It’s the magic of (in) sight — “As the eye is form’d, so are its powers,” sd. Blake. What a magical transformation, this cookery.

The quote to start with is an excellent part to jump from… and looking at the universe with a child’s eye…

How wonderful to explore this theme through the child’s eyes that want to know and embrace it all! Such a lovely verse!

This exudes a sense of home, of being at home in the universe. Amazing.

Wonder full! I love the way that you rendered this piece with unfettered simplicity. This is told through the eyes-wide-open reasoning of a child discovering that we cannot have a connection with everything – but there are faraway things that can have a place (a meaningful place) in our lives.

We are made of stardust after all.
Beautifully expressed!

Interesting. As an introvert, I think I was born classifying the world as me, Mommy, Daddy, and The Big World Of Strangers. I remember consciously learning about the concept of friendship around age five, identifying another human (a cousin) as a friend at six: Friends were people you’d known long enough that you began to feel fond of them, the way you felt fond of your favorite books, playthings, pillow…
