It is the 22nd Day of NAPOWRIMO. For Fireblossom’s last prompt at Real Toads. she is asking us to pick a pic and write about it. The pics are based upon her posts throughout the years. The title of the prompt is Beware of Poor Substitutions! Shay, thanks for being a friend and a poetic mentor.

“I know it’s not butter.” Anthony Bourdain

instant coffee – Postum no less.
Ersatz powdered crèamer.
Powdered artificial sweetener.
No wonder I can’t get going in the morning.
Or rather,
the false dawn in which my digital alarm goes off.
tokens in the fare slot on the bus,
a Danish with artificial jam.
No wonder I crash and burn before 9:00 a.m.
my plane crashes on the runway –
I don’t stand a chance.

The Notes: Postum is a powdered roasted-grain beverage popular as a coffee substitute. The caffeine-free beverage was created by Post Cereal Company founder C. W. Post in 1895 and marketed as a healthful alternative to coffee.

The Anthony Bourdain quote took me back to my childhood and an advertisement in which people had to taste the difference between margarine and butter – it made me smile. Accept no substitutes!

This breaks my heart. Coffee is definitely my get-up-and-go drug of choice.

Without coffee planes would go down, companies would fall short and nothing would work… those ersatz stuff are to be seen as malicious poison to topple nations and create wars.

Ack! All those powders. A poor substitute indeed. This made me smile – and shudder, lol.

There is NO substitute for coffee! (Nor for Shay.) I have my coffee plunged, which I think may be what you mean by pressed … and I like it black.

I load the coffee pot before bedding. First one up pushes the ON button unless it is too early. Then I make a Kuerig decaf and wait. Toni, you get more coffee flavor without addng sugar. Eating a chocolate biscuit along with adds coffee flavor. For me, at least.

My grandmother drank postum. She lived to be 98.

Sorry, I missed this one, Toni. I love the play on substitute and ersatz
