The Omelet

Day 30 of NAPWRIMO. At last! the End!!! I did it, 30 poems in 30 days. Write about your Muse. Lol. One of my many muses is food.

The Omelet
“The way you make an omelet reveals your character.” Anthony Bourdain

Sitting at Waffle House
on a grey Monday morning,
I had called into work because
it was too much effort.
The omelet was cooked quickly,
slightly brown on the outside and dry.
I ate it anyway because I was hungry.
I left a nice tip because I was grateful –
The cook showed up for his job.
more than I did that grey Monday.

I relate. I eat many things I would rather not, because I’m hungry, and they’re what’s here. LOL. Here, we have a place that makes waffles with an INCREDIBLE walnut sauce that is SO GOOD. Have had it once and will have it again when my daughter comes to visit me. LOL.

Yes, we need to thank the cook. You never know the effort he/she had to go to just to be there.

No you don’t. Tony once said that people who were nean to people in a restaurant when they were just trying to be nice and helpful were rude idiots. He was the champion of the dishwashers, the runners, the waiters, the prep cooks. I learned years ago to always be nice to these people. They were doibg their best to help me do my job. I am not saying to accept inferior food or service, but sometimes you have to step back and complain in a nice way. Trust me. Workers remember. And if it were not for the lowly runner, restaurants would chaos. I started out as a dishwasher. I worked my way up. I have a lot if sympathy for the short order cook trying to get out 20 orders in a short time. That is why I tipoed him. I saw this young kid working his heart out and I remembered my stint for awhile

I just don’t eat omelettes out, cos I like mine so much more. 😀 But this was a sweet story, economically told. And who knows, you may have encouraged him to keep trying and eventually do better

He was young and cooking for all he was worth. It would hsve been churlish to be rude. I like mine better as well but I was lazy.

Even coming to work on a Monday can be an effort worth praise.

One does what one must. And it’s nice to recognize this, even if the results aren’t perfect. I bet the cook was able to smile.
