The Lovers
“You will always be fond of me. I represent to you all the sins you never had the courage to commit.” Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
you spoke softly and offered me the world –
the world in a piece of fruit,
the world in a stroke of flesh,
the world in touch of tongue against tongue.
we sensed the wrongness
and yet –
we continued to nibble.
we broke the skin on the fruit
and sucked the juice.
we lay in each other’s arms
staring up at the virgin moon
and the untested stars.
in our ignorance we thought we
would live forever –
but our hearts grew weary and we died.
the news was simulcast to the world.

Oh the simulcast… everything is a reality show. Maybe we are all just actors in a dystopian play. Reminds me of the Truman show.

I never saw the Truman show. but I know how everything is whizbanged around the world in seconds!

This is incredibly powerful, Toni! I especially like “the world in touch of tongue against tongue. we sensed the wrongness and yet –we continued to nibble,” .. you depict wonderfully the allure of everything forbidden. ❤️

I agree with Björn about the simulcast and everything being a reality show. I too thought of The Truman show, which I’ve watched several times. And what a perfect quote from Oscar Wilde! You’ve captured sensuality on that piece of fruit, Toni!

we sensed the wrongness
and yet –
we continued to nibble.
I really like your approach to this image, and especially the interplay of meaning, as shown in the lines I quoted.
Thank you for participating so hot on the heels of April.

Love your ending… It is tiring to know there is no privacy any more, even from the moment life began.

Yes. It is rather wearing
