Kissing a Daffodil
“The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon, but its echo lasts a great deal longer.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
once when I was a child I pulled green blades
of a daffodil still wet with rain. I wanted to see how
it tasted. I placed the green blade
between my lips – slowly pulling using
my tongue to feel the sharp edge and the soft green
and the cold wetness of it.
years later after kendo
we stood in the rain
and you kissed me. Daffodil lips
you had and I drank in their cool
wetness and my tongue probed the sharp
edges of your teeth and the slightly
bitter taste of your lips – cherry blossom
fingers traced my cheek fluttering
falling to land on my left breast
and stay there – light and clinging.
our love was spring before
it became the sound of a distant crow
echoing across the cold dry field
of goodbye.

Sakura mochi is my favorite wagashi. The salty brine of the pickled leaf, the sweetness of the mochi and an… balanced perfection. Would I love it as much if it were made all year round? I don’t know, but that doesn’t keep me from wishing I could have it any time I wanted.

It usually made during the time of cherry blossoms for hanami – the pink and green for sakura themed foods. It is fairly labor intensive but can be made at home easily. It can be ordered off Amazon but alas does not come with the pickled leaf as I found out to my dismay. I have several left over from Cherry Blossom season which I made and then ate myself sick.

This one is all ache and sweet sighs and. I can see the speaker smile warmly, remembering that perfect moment of sharp kissing and lingering cherry blossom caresses. The final bit of imagery, all crow and dry fields, squeezes the heart.

You always get my poetry. None of the evocative and stunning comments either. Thank you.

I feel this so much as the short moment of a kiss, when already the crow is calling goodbye… maybe we always feel the end just like the sadness of cherry blossom that we know never will last.

I think so. All spring flowers have a certain brevity to them I think

This is so sensual and fresh, Toni. I can remember reading about people who ate daffodils when I was a child and thinking how cruel it was. But I love the thought of kissing a daffodil! What a description of a kiss!
