For Izy’s prompt at Real Toads, Is This the End?  She asks us to rewrite a story, a poem, an occurrence.

“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.” Norman Cousins

It all ended last June.
My friend Jeff committed suicide.
My mother died.
My friend Tony committed suicide.
If I had my druthers,
I druther they were still alive.
But then again, would I?
My mother was in physical pain,
nonverbal, unable to eat,
her mind mushed by Alzheimers
wasting slowly away.
My friend Jeff was in mental anguish
grieving his mother’s death
and the death of his beloved cocker spaniel,
deeply depressed.
Tony was in mental pain.
Would I want them back?
I would wish they had died not in pain.
I would wish I could redraw
the facts of their lives and that
they died quietly in their sleep.
or would I?
