For my prompt at Real Toads, using a quote as a springboard for a poem.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It’s that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that’s what the poet does.” ― Allen Ginsberg

the night is too long,
too hot even with the air conditioning.
is it only 1:00 a.m.?
thoughts tango around in my brain,
now they are doing a quickstep.
“Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue…”
insipid love poems,
long and rambling poems of
ocean and alcohol, suicide and drugs.
I know, I’ve done them all.
I want to be honest.
I want to be honest.

I understand what you mean – my original poetry did not connect with ME at all – I wrote darkly and sad… that’s not me at all. Reflective and honest, not overly sentimental – bu real. I agree – we all get trapped in doing it at times, but I think it is a start when we begin looking for such things…

I was a story teller before a poet and was slowly drawn into this marvellous company of poets through trial and error. Glad I got there eventually. But in poetry why be honest we are just entertainers?!

Because we are not just entertainers. Some of us are to be sure but not all of us are. Some of us write with honesty and truth, others tell tales, others tell lies, others tell truth.

This is wonderful Toni. I find myself sleeping less, being awakened in the night with the seeds of a poem sprouting vines in my head.

Ginsberg’s quote is stellar, and your introspective poem a very fitting match. From one who lies awake many hours of the night thinking around inexact corners, i get this.

If we are really honest, each of us would admit to have done them all. And in many cases, every line is true. Even the ones that cloak themselves–nothing can keep poetry from exposing what feeds it.

The honesty of it all. But still a question… “Is it only 1am?” wondering if the mind is playing tricks while dancing the two-step with the narrator’s thoughts.

No I am not the only honest person. I want to be honest. At least more honest. I am straightforward. I am too old not to be.
