Night Music

For my prompt at Wednesday Muse

Night Music
“And the night shall be filled with music…”- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

in the summer night I listen
to the cicadas singing to the moon.
down the road apiece
a dog howls in response.
the sound of my breathing is loud
in comparison.
the moon and the stars listen to the music
of it all and say nothing

I love any poem with cicadas in it. This is a moody piece of brevity, leaving me a bit sad, but happy that the moment passes upon the second reading.

You have described summer nights of my Midwest childhood and making me remember how much I enjoyed the sound of cicadas.

The stars and moon have heard it all before, nothing is new to them!

This is lovely Toni, and the last two lines are a brilliant closing.

They say nothing, but I wonder what the moon and stars might think about our earth’s nightly music!

Yes, I too love the stillness in your last image. It reminds me of so many nights growing up in farm country.

You have a magical way with description when it comes to sitting, watching and listening to nature. I am in the serenity here with you….the wonderful calm of the night.

Me: Unlike the moon and the stars, I cannot say nothing when I hear music like this, summer night filling the ears, framed ironically by celestial silence.

Moon and stars: (Shhhh…. Lona…. now just listen).

    Me: ^^-
