Summer Heat

For Lillian’s prompt over at dVerse – temperature.

Summer Heat
“August, the summer’s last messenger of misery, is a hollow actor.” – Henry Rollins

heat rolls over the brain
like a waterless tsunami –
drowning all in its smothering wave.
heat snakes rise from the roads,
false water shimmers in the distance
and cars roll through without a splash.
the air is close –
like a too tight hat around the brain.
a crack of thunder
that shakes the house –
windows rattle –
rain pours down suddenly stopping.
steam rises from the hot road,
funky smelling, like piss.

oh these descriptive phrases are right on for what happens in extreme heat —
(and might I add, your first two lines perfectly describe a hot flash!)
that heat snake, the shimmer, the close air….and then your ending made me both smile and think eeeeeyech! 🙂 GREAT post to the prompt. Thanks so much for participating, Toni!

I love that you have a quote from Henry Rollins, Toni! I’ve seen him with his band and on spoken word tours several times in the UK some years ago. He’s gorgeous and intelligent, with a wicked sense of humour!
Your opening lines leapt out at me: ‘heat… a waterless tsunami’ is spot on! Just reading about heat snakes rising from the roads and false water shimmering in the distance has got my temperature up – and it’s cooler here this evening with a nice breeze.

I like the way the heat builds up, and then is shattered by the rain. It mimics the event perfectly.

I like the clipped lines and the vivid imagery, Toni. Henry Rollins don’t play.

I like the description of “heat” as a “waterless tsunami”.

Very visual Toni. I felt the heat as well — gagged just a little on the last line, but it was effective!
