The Glory of the Sun

For the prompt, Glory, Mid-week Motif on Poets United.

The Glory of the Sun
“The beauty of that June day was almost staggering…The sunlight was a benediction.” Dan Simmons, Drood

My mother lay in her bed
slowly murmurming.
She was now in a skilled nursing
facility after being taken care of
at home by me.
But Alzheimers, seizures, weakened heart, failing kidneys caused the doctor
to recommend the care in a skilled nursing facility.
Visiting every day, pushing her
around the facility in a wheelchair,  taking her
to meals and special events.
One day she had a severe seizure
and she became non-verbal and bedridden.
One morning she quietly died.
I looked at her peaceful face
reflecting the glory
of the early June sun
streaming in from the window
by her bed.

Glory comes in many ways. I’m grateful for your presentation of glory in its somber dress.

Her face looks peaceful in the photo, too. How beautiful she must have looked, with the sun streaming on her. It sounds like she had a peaceful death, which is a blessing. Beautiful poem, Toni.

I love your poem. I too cared for my mother and mother-in-law. They both had Alzheimer’s. I understand the pain, the sadness you went through.

How lucky you were to be able to care for and be with you mother in her last years. I live in Australia and my mother was in care in England also with Alzheimers. I did visit her a number of times before she died but the last time she failed to recognise me and died a few weeks later.

Beautiful picture and a fine take on glory. I believe in that reflection, that glory. Your poem took me there.

Though it was indeed a moment of pain and sorrow for you but for your mother it was a moment of peace and grace. She had suffered so much. You are blessed to have been by her side at the needed hour. Thanks for the beautiful poem, Toni.

It sounds like she went very peacefully. I’m glad you got to be with her and see it.

A lovely picture of your mother. Of course the sun would shine down on her.
