Haibun: Hunter’s Moon

For Merrill’s Prompt at dVerse Poets Pub – a quadrille.  A quadrille is a poem of exactly 44 words using the prompter’s choice of words.  Today the word is “set”.

Haibun: Hunter’s Moon
“Always remember we are under the same sky, looking at the same moon.” —Maxine Lee

The sun has set and the air is cool. I watch the moon rise. It is a full hunter moon. An owl drifts overhead and I feel its passing in the air.
the moon is so bright
I can see like
a spotlight shines

I love those moon names. We saw a barn owl on the way home last night – always magical.

Every three years, the Hunter’s Moon is also the Harvest Moon. Traditionally, people in the Northern Hemisphere spent the month of October preparing for the coming winter by hunting, slaughtering and preserving meats for use as food. This led to October’s Full Moon being called the Hunter’s Moon, Dying Grass Moon, and Blood Moon. The Native Americans had some amazing names. I picked names from mainly the eastern tribes.

HUNTER’S MOON, a perfect title for your novel in waiting. My son-in-law is elk hunting today, up in the snow line. I wonder if he’s had any of those moons?

Well, he has at least one of them today! LOL. I am not writing a novel. I like brevity over long winded anyday.

Even in moonlight the owls pass unseen. I like the atmosphere.

” I see the moon, the moon sees me, under the shade of the old oak tree”. These lyrics came to mind. I could almost hear the owl pass by!

Beautiful poem Toni, and I loved the flyover by the owl.

I also love all the different names for the moon. A moon must have an owl or two, and owls are hunters, so this one is perfect, Toni. I especially love the moon as a spotlight.

You give us some gorgeous visuals here, yet I am most captivated by this…”An owl drifts overhead and I feel its passing in the air.” I would love to feel that.
