The Hawk

For Quadrille Monday at dVerse Poets Pub. Kim is the host and the word for the day is “keep”.  A quadrille is exactly 44 words sans title.  A word for the day is given to be used in the quadrille.

The Hawk

“There is a hawk in me that wants to soar…” – Carl Sandburg

the hawk flies overhead
keeping its eyes on the
landscape below.
surveying below him,
searching for movement,
for food.
frost has come
and the leaves are changing
their colors.
leaves keep their secrets
while the moon turns
all grey at night.
the hawk sleeps.

    And somewhere below
    the field-mouse is hiding.

And the hawk sees all. Wonderful Toni.

Toni, great hawk profile. On another subject, I read an Esquire article on Tony Bourdain a day or so ago that talks about some of the things being auctioned. You probably already saw it, but just in case:

Yes. I have seen the complete listing several times. I wish I could afford the customade meteorite knife. It is kibd of sad that his wife is disposing of his goods. He spent liberally.

Wonderful, Toni. It’s not often we see hawks around here. There are peregrine falcons at Norwich Cathedral, and we spotted a red kite the other day. I think about soaring when I observe any kind of bird. I love the reminder that:
    ‘frost has come
    and the leaves are changing
    their colors.’

Such a beautiful perspective, Toni. I especially love “leaves keep their secrets”

Must be getting more difficult finding a meal -as the cold emerges. Good imagery here.

Nice piece on hawkdom; I don’t know when hawks sleep, like owls, they can hunt at night.

This is beautiful! ❤️ I doubt there is anything that escapes the eyes of the hawk 🙂

So grey, so grey is the sky. The hawk imagery is lovely.

The hawk sees all, but can’t see the future.

Nice line about the leaves keeping secrets.

I love watching hawks ride the air, or when they sit on power lines watching for their next meal. Lovely poem, Toni.

Such majestic birds. They are very still when they sit and watch. (K)

“leaves keep their secrets” – I like this line. Do the leaves ever release them? Will they when returning to the earth’s soil?

Ever watchful, it will not be denied.

A sumptuous and palpable autumn feel exudes from this one, Toni!
