Sleeping Bee

I went out to check on my bees because there have been some very cold nights. I put the stethoscope next to the hive and listened rather than breaking the hive open and letting in the cold air. To my satisfaction, my bees are fine. This is for Kim’s challenge on Real Toads, The Uncertainty of a Poet. I don’t know if I did this right. It isn’t my style at all but it is interesting.

Sleeping Bee
“We ought to do good to others as simply as a horse runs, or a bee makes honey, or a vine bears grapes season after season without thinking of the grapes it has borne.” Marcus Aurelius

I am a bee in a hive.
I am a sleeping bee.

I am a warm bee safe in the middle
of other sleeping bees.

other sleeping bees are warm
and snuggled together.

I am a snuggling bee sleeping through winter
winter is outside the hive

outside the hive winter roars
let the winter roar

I am safe within my hive
I am sleeping in a hive

I will awaken in spring
I will sleep no longer

You made me feel like the bee, cozily asleep in its hive. Beautiful. I love it.

Oh, that’s lovely! And I’m sure you ‘did it right’. Also you did it well. (You made me want to be a bee.)

I’m so glad your bees are fine, Toni; we had frost this morning and Mojo didn’t come back until three, so I didn’t sleep for worrying about her, so I can imagine how you would be concerned about such a delicate life system as a hive. I love your sleeping bee poem which, although it doesn’t follow Cope’s form exactly, makes me happy and, like Rosemary, you made me want to be a bee!!

Thank you Kim. I am dyslexic. This poem is in a style I call circular. I was trained by my parents first as a small child and then later by myself to think in a linear pattern. This helped me in school. Back in those days, children were considered to be learning disabled or”retarded”. I had to think logically in order to succeed in school. My first “language” in school were maths and sciences. I enjoy reading this style of poetry but find it almost impossible to write it. Sorry it is not the style. This is the best I could do to “copy” the style. If it had been in the style of quantum mechanics, I would have had no problem, lol. I am glad Mojo is home safe and sound. We do worry about our fur babies. I hope you are feeling better. Like Sherry, I think maybe a space heater? We have a small one we use in the back section of our home that is radiant and energy and cost efficient.

I used to be a beekeeper’s assistant. That sound, so rewarding! I’m glad your bees are faring well in the cold.

You make the hive sounding such a cozy place for bees in winter… makes me want to hibernate too.

I love what this poem says about relationships with nature, with others, with self… What they do to us and what we do for them. Also, nudged me to reread The Bees, by Laline Paull.

We’ve had some unseasonably cold weather here in Seattle this weekend. Your poem (along with my bourbon-spiked coffee) is keeping me snug and warm.

Ever tried Irish Mist in your coffee? It is my personal favorite. I think you’d like being all snugged up with the bees. I have days when I wish I was tiny enough to be in there with them.

I imagine all the buzzing would become comforting white noise after a while. I haven’t tries Irish Mist, but I’ll give it a look . 🙂

I didn’t think of the buzzing but you are right. I became intro’d to Irish Mist when I was 25. It is a little bit sweeter Irish Whiskey. Perfect in strong rich coffee. I love it in espresso.

I love your poem. I don’t believe there is a wrong or right way… it just is. Bees 🐝 are so very precious and I think I’d like to be right in the middle of that hive right now where it is safe and warm. Beautiful.
