Voice of the Wolf
“Our lives are richer when we listen to what wolves have to teach us.” Jim and Jamie Dutcher

She approached the old woman slowly,
head down in a gesture of peace.
We are all wolves howling to the same moon,
she said.
the old woman put down her paper.
she pondered what the wolf said.
We are all wolves howling to the same moon,
the wolf said again.
This time,
the old woman rose from the bench
and followed as the wolf led her to the woods
and to the full moon.

This is so lovely. We ARE all wolves howling to the same moon. I would follow her too. I will, one day.

Yes, follow the wolf and let the moon hear your howls.

I found the refrain intriguing enough to follow the wolf as well. Lovely poem.

Great words, chilling by one interpretation, beautiful by another. Clever. By the way, ‘follow’ is an anagram of ‘lo wolf’

Yeppers. I am aware of the anagram. You are one of the few to pick up on that. I often embed an anagram or classic haiku in my poems. You just have to search for them

Aroooooo. I am known to howl at the moon. A dear friend of mine who died 3 years ago, became my friend when I wrote about howling at the moon. I miss her.

Oh, how I love this version of what is happening! Yes, to be an old woman alone can – surprisingly – make for a new kind of freedom.

In rather like the messages poets send with contributions this way hoping that humans will wake up and be part of the natural world again rather than a greedy thief and usurper that cares not about our fellow creatures in Earth

I can see them howling together, remembering that we will never be alone (if we look and see the world).

All wolves howling at the same moon. I love that image and idea. How alike we are women and wolves, both wild things under the gaze of the brilliant moon.

I love this–every bit of the image and story. It reminded me of an old Tanith Lee story in “Red as Blood,” where the mother ran with the wolves and her little girl had to learn how to join her.
