Haibun: Cornfield

A quadrille (44 words sans title plus the word for the day).  Today at dVerse the word is “sun”.

The Cornfield
“A light wind swept over the corn, and all nature laughed in the sunshine.” Anne Bronte

The cornrnfield stretched on forever. I walked down the rows letting the leaves stroke my arms, my face. The sun hung in the sky like a trinket on a Christmas tree.

Planting

Planting
In the wildness of nature,
I become peaceful
and happy and full of joy.
Stepping in furrows of a newly plowed field
I drop seeds or plants.
I watch the birds in the sky
and wait for the first bit of green to show.
I plant extra for the birds and
the other critters.
In the wildness of the city
I get quiet and move carefully
as if passing by hungry feral beasts.
I’ll take the trees and corn over the
buildings any day.

Dreaming Corn

Dreaming Corn
rows of corn dream under
the peach ice cream moon.
crickets drone and birds sleep.
the sun begins to rise in shades
of raspberryorangelemon sherbet
and already at 6:00 a.m. it is 90 degrees
worth of heat. Birds begin to
sing, talking to one another
as they fling themselves to the blue sky
and back to the corn.
the stalks of corn form a cathedral
built of tall green towers
and music of rustling leaves.
birds tell each other of ants on this stalk,
crickets hiding under a fallen stalk
and flying bugs buzzing about.
ripening ears listen to the gossip.
the heat is a sweat of moist green.
until at dusk the birds discuss sleep
and slowly grow silent.

Easy Corn Soup – Hakone, Japan

I like Japanese recipes.  I LOVE easy Japanese recipes.  A young engineering intern from Hakone, sent me this recipe as a “thank you” for helping him.  His mentor, a most venerable engineer here temporarily in the US from Japan, told him not only would it be polite, but friendly as well and that I eventually would ask him anyway! 

Hikaru said it was an amazingly easy dish, very comforting and frugal as well.  “We all of us, love corn soup!  It can be purchased from dispensers along side of coffee and soft drinks at internet cafes.  When I want taste of my home, I make this.  You can make in 15 minutes or less.  A recipe makes enough for me or, for four normal people.” 

1 can of corn (15.25 oz)

1/2 yellow onion (sliced)

1 1/2 cup milk

1 tbsp butter

1 sprig of parsley – chopped

1 scallion

2 cubes of vegetable boullion 

Partially melt butter in a saucepan, then saute onion for 5 minutes until soft.  Add corn and stir for a minute or so.  Add milk and heat on medium-low until hot but not boiling.  Crumble vegetable bullion cubes into the soup and stir.  Remove from heat and transfer to blender.  Blend until smooth.  Return to saucepan, heat, then garnish with parsley thinly sliced scallion.
