About

I am a Southern woman – born and bred in the south but with deep roots travelling all the way to Japan. This blog started out as a general blog – recipes, musing, poetry. This is a South Meets East Blog.  It has since evolved into poetry.  I have been writing poetry since I was six.  Mostly very bad poetry.

I love Japan and all that is involved with it – the aesthetics, the culture, the love of nature.  Much of my poetry is centered in nature.  I specialize in Japanese forms but – I divert into different styles, different emotions.  I am a world traveler having been to Japan several times, even helping to plant rice. southese east Asia is my favorite place  – Hanoi, Hong Kong, Japan, Shanghai, Laos, Thailand.

I hope you will find poetry that gives you pleasure, makes you cry, causes anger in your soul.

“Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom… is realizing how small I am, and unwise and how far I have yet to go.”  Anthony Bourdain

The name of my blog:   “The perfect blossom is a rare thing. You could spend your life looking for one, and it would not be a wasted life. [With his dying breath] Perfect… They are all… perfect”… Katsumoto, The Last Samurai

Japanese Aesthetics:
Mono no Aware – the pathos of things
Wabi: Subdued, Austere Beauty
Yūgen: Mysterious Grace
Iki: Refined Style
Kire: Cutting
Enso: absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (the void).

Kanzensakura or Kanzen Sakura – perfect cherry blossom, perfection

My favorite movies are anything w/ Horiyuki Sanada and Takeshi Kaneshiro – two beyond gorgeous men but Sanada-san is an especially good actor – fave of his would be Twilight Samurai. Other moveies include Seven Samurai, Hara Kiri: death of a Samurai, and recently, After the Rain. TV shows would be Monster, Tramps Like Us, any of the “No Laugh Batsu Games”…waiting for new year’s when a new series comes out. I really like those 5guys, can always make me laugh! Big manga and anime fan. What about you?

With Christmas break coming up I plan to watch some of their movies then! Seven Samurai was amazing. I’m also a huge anime and manga fan 🙂 I’m not so big on shonen, except that ironically my favourite anime of all time turned out to be a shonen – Durarara

Isn’t that always the case with Anime? LOL….. Kaneshiro’s latest, Dragon, takes him out of his usual pretty boy persona ( he does look like an angel). He is a better actor than given credit for. I’ve been following Sanada since mid-80’s. he’s matured from handsome to drop dead handsome and elegant. he is also a REAL martial artist and member of Japan’s Action Club…can really sing and dance. He is a superstar. If you can find images from his photographic book, l’homme, it will be worth the look see.

Only the second time when I watched it. The first watch was just so…..amazing with all the different elements. I felt I needed to watch it again to get more from it. I did pick up on that. Seven Samurai, Mag. Seven, and need I say even – The Guns of Navarrone?

I dunno if you know about these two YouTube channels, but since you like everything Japan and Japanese food, I think you will like them. Lots of video recipes and funny commentary too (the second guy):

http://www.youtube.com/user/cookingwithdog (don’t worry, its not what you think, she’s a Japanese woman who cooks with her poodle sitting on a stool next to her)

And this guy, he’s great, I really like his stuff, sometimes he does funny comments with his videos too (he’s a Japanese guy who likes to make video recipes of Japanese and Americanized Japanese-style traditional foods):

    http://www.youtube.com/user/runnyrunny999

I think you’ll enjoy them, if you don’t know about these two channels already, which you probably do anyway.

    Enjoy. 🙂

Thank you so much! I’ve seen the lady with the poodle. She has some good food – but the poodle always cracks me up because he is so solemn. I’ll check out the other link you gave me. I am addicted to the Downtown Gangs No Laugh shows. They will also do mini game shows. Search You Tube for no laugh videos – besure it is the Downtown gang and not imitators. The garden is actually Ryon-ji in Kyoto! The banner is supposed to give three different edits of the garden, randomly. I loved the place as well. I am so glad the picture takes you to a good place. Sometimes I get really dark and I know people don’t always like that, but when someone like you tells me something on the page takes them to a good place, I am so very happy. Again, I thank you for following my blog. I hope you will check out some of the recipes, some of them, if only to read a little about the history of them, ‘specially the Southern ones. 🙂 !! > Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2013 16:16:58 +0000 > To: thspencer51@hotmail.com >

At the risk of sounding cliche, Japanese Cotton Cheesecake is the bomb. I hope you will try it. It took me three times to get it down – either not folding in enough or too much. The third time was wonderful. A cheesecake made with Ponderosa lemons sounds divine.

Most definitely!! But you gotta have some lemon in that tea and the onions and hamburger steak have to have been cooked together on an ancient grill or in a cast iron skillet, like my great-grandmother’s that is still going strong.

Plus, i have to go to work to get these precious engineers licensed in VA!! Hey, you’re up early too. When do you head back to Colombia?

I truly do know that feeling. I get it when I use things like Mammy’s skillet or make one of my Papa’s or my Ninny’s recipes. it took me 20 years but I finally have her fresh orange cake down pat. My aunt ate the first bite and started crying – it is just like Mama’s…..I accomplished something great. I am pleased and my Ninny is smiling.

I have enjoyed the pics from Jasper so very much. That connection to family, places, past – is important. But I know your wife and the kitties will be glad to have you back! Past and present make a lovely quilt.

The return ordeal starts on January 8th. Not looking forward to it, but it will be good to return to my wife and our cats. Today a friend of mine from Idaho, who came to Alabama to get his mom, went on a tour of Townley with me. We spent pretty much all day there seeing what is left of Townley and making photographs. One of which I will be posting soon. I am glad you have enjoyed the pics and hope you continue doing so. Next May, I think, I will have a new Jasper/Townley book ready to print on demand. I have asked several people to contribute their favorite stories of Jasper (they will get full credit for their writing, and maybe a few will do that. If you have a favorite story of Jasper I will be very happy to include it in the book. Just WP it and send it to me at lostcreekpublishing@me.com

I fully support your no awards position. I’ve been thinking of doing that myself. It seems like they just take up so much time when time is already limited and you could be devoting it to things that feel more… essential to your being. If that makes sense lol

Oh and I have to say I am totally jealous… I hope someday to learn how to make sushi and udon too. Especially sushi. My husband and I have been looking for local classes, but have come up empty so far. So cool you know how though! Let me know if you have any or ever post on how to make either of those!

NOTE: I do apologize. I thought I sent this reply to you but saved it to draft instead. I have seen, so many times, people give awards back and forth to each other to just rack up awards. But I have also had some excellent bloggers take the time to pass along an award because they thought I should have it. Doing the awards does take time away from regular blogging and I think, too many times can sometimes direct a person to “blog to please” rather than blog to connect, give information, enlighten… But I am going to keep one award – The Inner Peace Award. Clowie at Clowie’s Corner gave this to me last year because she said she felt peaceful when she visited my blog. You have to understand, Clowie is a Great Pyrenees Mountain. . I know she doesn’t write the blog, that is her “bidped” who writes as the persona of Clowie. The writer is so good – she gives information about puppy socialization, animal welfare, adventures that Clowie has. it makes me smile every Wednesday. And I am one of those odd people who many times, will talk and share more with an animal than a human. I was feeling down and Clowie asks me if it big furry hug from her would help? Well, of course it would! But that Inner Peace award to me is very special. it is how I want people to feel when they visit my blog, my home, whatever – peaceful and welcome. So I am going to keep that one. Sushi is truly easy. Sushi is of course the rice. Sashimi is raw fish. hand rolls are the easiest and onigiri are balls of rice with good stuff inside. These are often taken to picnics, such as at Hanami. I did a post on hanami picnic food. I prefer vegetable and pickled veggie sushi rolls. hand rolls often have the thin slices of raw fish draped over them. in the summer, I live off vegetable sushi. you can get a sushi mat, rice, etc. at Asian stores for very little money. I put plastic wrap on my mat so I can make inside out rolls – rice on the outside, nori around the veggies, and keep the mat nice and clean. There are a lot of good how tos on you tube – how to make the sushi rice and then how to roll and serve. They often show a shallow wooden tub to cool the rice but you don’t need one – just a nice wide shallow dish to work the sushi vinegar into the rice and cool. My husband uses a hand fan to cool while I work the rice. A good brand of rice is Nishiki – it is a good brand and is such good quality, it is often used to make sake. and it isn’t that expensive or hard to find. Nori – the darker and shinier it is, the better quality. You can watch some videos, get the ingredients together and go to it. Even if you make a mess, it still tastes good! You tube truly has a lot of videos about sushi and sushi rice along with handrolls, etc. I posted a how to for udon with a lovely video at the end of the post. Be careful though about the wasabi you buy – often they have mixed regular horseradish, colored into the wasabi. Pure wasabi can be a bit expensive, but you don’t need a lot of it. Also a post on miso soup and a truly delicious miso baked chicken. Left over miso baked chicken is a good filler in sushi. Again, I apologize for not sending this as I thought I did. No need to apologize. Been there, done that myself. Plus, I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had much time for “me” (i.e. writing and blogging) anyway. “Blog to please” Yes! I’ve felt that way a few times before. And I’m so sorry to hear some people were not nice in letting you know they don’t accept awards. That’s just wrong. I think it’s better to just say nothing than be a jerk about it, especially when you’re just trying to recognize them for having a nice blog. Awwww, I’ve read Clowie’s blog before (love it!) and that was so nice of Clowie! And I don’t think you’re odd for talking to an animal more than a human. I fall into that category myself. Sometimes I’ll be talking to our furkids and my husband will ask me what I’m talking about because he has no clue… I just tell him I’m have a private conversation haha.

Wow, thank you so much for all the information on sushi. Really helpful! I never thought of looking on youtube! Great idea, thank you! I think we’re going to give it a try soon. I love inside out rolls, so I’ll definitely be using your plastic wrap tip. I’ll have to look around for that Nishiki rice too. There isn’t too many Asian specialty stores around, but some of the supermarkets have a pretty good selection. Oh and no wasabi for us, so no worries there. But I LOVE miso soup. LOVE IT! A sushi meal is not complete without it 🙂 I’m going to look for your post on it in a minute. Thank you so so much for taking the time to write all this information. Super helpful and I really appreciate it 🙂

You are welcome. I’m going to do a post on Chawanmushi soon. It’s good stuff and simple. I actually have found the nishiki rice in a chain of regular grocery stores. Do give sushi a go and let me know how much fun you’ve had. There is also futomaki – fat rolls – lots of my sushi end up being fat rolls because I get so happy with the fillings.

Love your blog! I was raised in the Deep South and married a wonderful Korean girl that is now a grandmother we all call Tiger Mom. I have loved the many Asian people, their cultures, cuisine, language, arts and philosophies for decades.

Thank you! I love the Asian people, food, cultures…..I’m mainly focused on Japan but I do enjoy all the cultures. I attend a Cambodian church and have enjoyed getting to know the people from this country over the past few years. And the food….oh my! Thank you for the visit and thoughtful comment! I searched your post ‘when life throws you lemons…’ and couldn’t find it. From engineer to pharmacy is quite the leap! It sounds like you have a lot of talent hidden up those tiny 4’10” sleeves of yours 🙂

Thank you. There are so many wonderful blogs I follow that it is hard to pick three. But I do like introducing folks to each other and this is a fun way to do this. I am happy you picked Seeker as one. I had not followed “Forgotten Medows” before but went and explored. What a lovely blog to be introduced to. Thank you.

I LOVE your About page! (My About page got lost when I was reformatting…hope to have it up soon) Your blog is so versatile that I could CONNECT on so many levels to have conversations with you. I’m from the South, Texas and was raised on Fried Chicken and watermelon, and grits and wonderful corn on the cob…and nanner pudding…Have you tried Paula Dean’s It’s Not Yo Mama’s Banana Pudding? It’s an amazing delight..and a once in awhile treat. I make a pretty good cheesecake and would love to try yours. I set a weird goal of wanting to be the best Cheesecake maker so as a grandma my grandkids could come over any time and have something they loved that connected them to me. I have stacks of different ways to create it and add any topping or stir in I can imagine. Funny goal considering I enjoy eating soup more than sweets.
I’ve been cooking since I was a little girl and enjoy it immensely. It’s the act of creating that’s so delightful.
I like your camera photography too. I do Poetry Therapy and Cell Phone therapy. Have you heard of those? It’s a very great way to assist people in healing that allows them to do their own healing.
I guess I’ve really clogged up the comments, but really enjoyed the connections. (There are so many more!) I do hope you will come back and visit and maybe write two words or a line on the collaboration. I’d love to hear what you soul summons you to do. :0) Looking forward to chatting more later!

Thank you so much for “clogging” up the comments! This is what I enjoy so much about blogging, making the connections and having the conversations. I was afraid when I chose a new theme, I would lost my About page. I lost my menus! What a bear getting them going again. I have loved japan just about all my life and for 14 years, had a Japanese partner. Our story is in my blog. We taught each Japanese and Southern cooking and learned in so many ways, it is so similar. The Cotton Cheesecake is not your standard American/Italian cheesecake. it is lighter in texture and not as sweet. The Japanese do not go for the very sweet desserts as we do, although on occasion they like their sweet ice cream and cakes. I posted my nanner pudd’n recipe the first year I blogged. It’s our family recipe and though I have tried others, I go back to this basic one every time. It was sent to my boyfriend at the time, mother, while still warm. She told him if he let me go, she’d bonk him and that I was a keeper. Happy to say he took my advice and we’ve been married for 14 very happy years. I have not heard of the photo or poetry therapies, but they make perfect sense as a way to connect to self and to others. and be creative in the process. RE: fried chicken. I am going to post a Japanese fried chicken and sunomono recipes this week. Also, for fun, you may want to read my post about Japanese Christmas eve and KFC. It is definitely a different and fun way of how it is looked at in a different culture. While other folks are having turkey dinners or finger foods for Christmas eve, we have KFC.

And thank you for the reminder about the collaboration! I’ve been so busy studying for midterms, I got a little lost. I think I shall cogitate on that right now before I do anything else. Have a good rest of the week. This is certainly a lot of fun. Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2014 14:52:21 +0000 To: thspencer51@hotmail.com

One of my favourite t-shirts (that I am so going to pinch from my youngest son once he grows out of it) has a haiku on it: Haikus are easy, But sometimes they don’t make sense, Refrigerator.

But I do love the real thing, too. Looking forward to reading through yours. 🙂

I hope you enjoy. I am very serious about them, even the funny ones and write according to the classic rules. I have two favorite tee shirts = one from my husband and one from a fellow engineer. If it isn’t broken, take it apart anyway. and Optimist – The glass is half full. Pessimist: The glass is half empty. Engineer: Use the right sized glass. I’m glad you headed over here. Hope you feel welcomed.

Thank you so much for this kindness. It is deeply appreciated but I no longer accept awards. The only award I have posted is the Inner Peace award which is posted in honor of my father, a WWIIveteran, an Army sharpshooter who was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. I know there are some wonderful blogs out there but great people who should have this award more than I. Aggain, thank you for you kindness.
