Almost Christmas
We hold hands across the hospital bed. My husband is asleep and I watch him as he sleeps. Outside the window, snow falls – slowly and silently. Sounds filter to us from other rooms along the floor. I move my hand to be more comfortable. His breathing is steady.

Sometimes steady, predictable, calm breathing is an answer to prayer, along the road to recovery.
“the window reflects us” … For some reason, this line stands out to me. It’s the image I will carry away and ponder. Maybe because it is a reminder that truth is not necessarily what’s in our brains, because our perspectives change, lie, get distorted. Sometimes seeing the flatter dimension actually brings clarity.

I believe the meaning of Christmas in love and somehow in the middle of the most difficult times, love flourishes. Like having to give birth in a stable. And I see snow on your screen!

My sympathies are with you. I have spent many days the last two months doing this–holding on, watching, feeling that a secret process continues that I am powerless to affect…your sparse, direct language here underlines the kind of numb but piercingly clear vision one has in that place. Thanks for sharing the moment, difficult as it is, and I’m glad you were able to find words–however many–as they seem to be one of the few things that help.

Thank you. I do apologize for the over 55 words. I always try to keep within the limits of the prompt. I am posting from the hospital so I may not be able to comment as I like to do. I am hoping that in the new year, all will be well with all of us. That there will be peace and joy.

Bless you Kim. He is progressing, slowly. He has developed pneumonia. I wish you and all you hold dear (including the cats) a happy Christmas filled with joy. PS when Brad gets out of hospital and his appetite back, I have promised him a real Christmas fry up. There is a local company that makes an excellent vegetarian sausage and bacon. I even have Heinz beans and HP sauce. ??

That haiku is pure pain. The thought that, to the speaker, it reflects Christmas (something that should be happy and gentle)… but a loved one in the hospital is rarely something that fills us with peace.
