Secrets
“And stare through the wet branches of an oak
In winter, & realize I am looking at the stars
Again.” Winter Stars by Larry Levis

the stars in winter hold secrets
close to their hearts.
their silence tells of sleeping bees
and bare trees and falling flakes of snow.
they hold these secrets close to their hearts –
telling no one except the night sky.
they wait for pink spring
and the waking of the bees.

Most poets striving to find deeper or wider or more sublime truth find them staring harder into the words. Apprehending the mind of nature is difficult for us peabrains, and we need poems like this to see what’s there because it isn’t, or yet. The patience is all. Great epigraph; Larry Levis was some poet, huh. Love that guy.

I think the stardust we are made of carries those secrets into our own hearts. Because I always find myself yearning for spring, waiting for the bees to hum their song…

    This is lovely, Toni.

One has hints of what aspects of life that is being held back.. But one should not leave it to progress on its own. Constant monitoring is necessary!

You have captured well this time of waiting. I have things poking up in my planters already, to my delight. Hope you are making your way gently through the days, Toni.

No stars in the sky here tonight, but I have your lovely poem to remind me of them, Toni. I love the internal rhyme and imagery in the lines:
‘their silence tells of sleeping bees
and bare trees and falling flakes of snow’,
and, of course, pink spring secrets.

This is so beautiful and I wonder how many of us are silently colluding with these stars if they will have us.
